Thou shalt not steal. Exodus 20:15
A Christian lost his job because of his honesty. But he got another job for the same reason. His employer became involved in some illegal business deals that would have required that Christian to lie and take actions that would amount to theft. Because he refused, his employer fired him. When the Christian applied to work at another company, that company contacted his former employer to ask about him. His former boss responded, ‘If you need an honest man, hire him. He won’t steal from you, and he won’t steal for you.’ Because of his good testimony, the Christian got the job.
Honesty is a huge part of a good testimony. The same dishonest world that thinks little of stealing and cheating on taxes and lying about financial matters has an entirely different standard for Christians. They expect us not to steal or cheat on taxes or lie about financial matters. And they quickly notice if we do, rightfully branding us as hypocrites. But if we remain honest, they notice that too, and enable us to witness to them.
All right thinking people know that stealing is wrong, although some of the unsaved shrug it off as unimportant. But it is important, and each Christian should understand that it is a sin against God and against whoever is being stolen from. The Scriptures have plenty of reminders for us to live honestly before the world. And if we do, we show that God’s holy standards for His people are our standards, too. -Jim MacIntosh
