Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour. Exodus 20:16
The penalty for deliberately lying under oath in a Canadian court can be as much as 14 years in prison. That tells us that the Canadian legal system considers lying to be a very bad thing. So does God. In fact, His penalty for lying is eternal damnation. Revelation 21: 8 tells us that ‘..all liars shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death’. But, we all lie. Everyday, we all misrepresent the truth in some form, and often many times over. It doesn’t seem so bad to us. So why is it such a big deal with God?
God hates lying because it is so directly opposed to His own holy character. Among the few things that are impossible with God is the ability to lie. He cannot and will not ever do it. This is critically important because it means God is absolutely trustworthy. None of His promises can ever fail. The Lord Jesus could proclaim Himself to be the way, the truth, and the life (John 14:6). Every word He spoke was absolutely true. The same is true of the holy Scriptures: every word of history is accurate, every word of prophecy will surely come to pass.
Yes, God knows that all of humanity tells lies, and He hears and records every one of them. But it must grieve Him when one of His own children deliberately utter a lie. Every Christian has within the Holy Spirit residing, a Spirit Who longs that our words would be as true as His. Think of that whenever a lie seems more convenient than pleasing your God. -Jim MacIntosh
