And I will take you to Me for a people, and I will be to you a God: and ye shall know that I am the LORD your God, which bringeth you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians. Exodus 6:7
Today’s text is God’s great promise and purpose for His earthly people as He prepared to deliver them from Egypt and usher them to their promised land. He would give them an identity, a Deity, and a deliverance. That same three that He provided in Old Testament days He provides in our dispensation of Grace.
In the epistle to Titus we are reminded that Christ redeemed us that we might be a peculiar people, that is, a people for His possession. In a world that does not know or care about God, there is a tiny percentage that He can look upon as His own. On a world that can do nothing but disobey and rebel, God has His little remnant who have the power and the desire to be His children.
Before our salvation, we had no God; we recognized the lordship of none. But now, the Lord is our God, and we are both able and willing to worship Him. In contrast to the fools who declare ‘No God for me’, we gladly declare that He is the Lord of our lives and the God Who we worship.
Our deliverance is just as real and important as that of the Israelites. Our spiritual burdens were lifted at Calvary, as we appreciated that our condemnation for sin is forever gone. But God did not just deliver Israel from Egypt; He delivered them through the wilderness and into Canaan. Just as He first delivered us from the penalty of our sin, just as He daily delivers us from the power of sin, and just as He will shortly deliver us from the very presence of sin. It’s a perfect deliverance.
An identity, a Deity, a deliverance, all because our God has taken us to Himself. -Jim MacIntosh
