And thou shalt put upon Aaron the holy garments, and anoint him, and sanctify him; that he may minister unto Me in the priest’s office. Exodus 40:13
Our text describes the dedication ceremony for Israel’s first high priest, as he prepares to take over the responsibility of managing the Tabernacle of the congregation. The ceremony includes two steps: putting on the special garments of the high priest’s office, and being anointed with the special anointing oil that was applied to all of the Tabernacle furnishings, thus sanctifying him for the holy office.
Although every Christian today serves the Lord as a believer priest, we don’t get to wear special holy garments like Aaron did, or get to have holy anointing oil poured on our heads like Aaron did. But we can do the spiritual equivalent. For the holy garments, we can dress ourselves in obedience to the Word of God in our behaviour, our speech, and our appearance. A good testimony makes for a beautiful garment before the Lord. For the holy anointing oil, we can allow the Holy Spirit to take over every aspect of our lives. Joyful submission to Him makes for a beautiful life of victory in the Lord.
As believer priests, our desire should be to please the Lord Who we serve. And we will please Him if we are sanctified to look and act like His Word tells us to. -Jim MacIntosh
