Lesson for the Lord’s Day
In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. John 1:4
It is significant that the first thing God created in the world was light (Genesis 1:3). Before that, there was only darkness. But light came, and made a difference between itself and the darkness. Where did that light come from? Not the sun, because it was not created until the fourth day. God Himself provided that light.
And so it was with us, before we were saved. There was only darkness, no appreciation for God, no ability to perceive things for ourselves. But God said, ‘Let there be light’. His Holy Spirit moved upon the face of our darkness, and His Son came into our experience. We received light. And we received life.
He is the only life and light that we have. For those of us who are getting a little older, it is good to appreciate that even though our physical life is starting to wane and our bodies are starting to crumble, we still have every bit as much life as when we were first saved. That is, every bit as much of the only life that matters. Because of His resurrection, He lives in the power of an endless life. And we have received that same life.
Every year, the media makes much of an event called ‘Earth Hour’, when everybody was to turn off their lights for an hour, hoping it would make a difference in the energy consumption. They are concerned that too much light and energy consumption will destroy life. But the Lord Jesus came to give us light that would give us life forever more.
