Sermon for Saturday
Except the Lord of Hosts had left unto us a very small remnant, we should have been as Sodom, and we should have been like unto Gomorrah. Isaiah 1:9
How big is a remnant? In the fabric stores, remnants are usually pieces of cloth that are too small to make a sizable garment, but are great for small tasks such as patching clothes, making doll clothes, or making patchwork quilts. Oops, quilts are not a small task. But you know what I mean. Our text today speaks of a very small remnant. Of what use is a very small remnant. Hardly enough fabric to be used by a mechanic to wipe oil off his hands. But Isaiah says a very small remnant makes a huge difference.
Remember what happened to Sodom and Gomorrah? Our world today is little better than those two immoral and evil cities. But there is a very small remnant that God has left in this world. That very small remnant is all that stands between this world and the outpouring of God’s righteous wrath. Although the world hates, rejects, and ignores God, God in His great love toward the world has left us here to preserve the world against His judgment.
We are that remnant. We are the salt of the earth (Matthew 5:13) and our presence preserves this world from corruption. If we were not here, ungodly men and women would be much more free to employ their evil practices, to plunge society into much deeper depravities. This is why it is so important for our testimony to be bright, for those around us to know that we stand for God, for morality and decency, for respect for authority, for righteousness. When we are gone, the world will be unprotected against its own self-destruction.
As a member of God’s very small remnant, live for God today, and show your love for lost souls.-Jim MacIntosh
