And God spake unto Moses and said unto him, I am the Lord. Exodus 6:2
Four words in our text – I am the Lord – occur more than 150 times in the Word of God. They have been described as God’s shorthand for His limitless, unrivalled authority. These words carry the weight of God’s absolute claim over creation, covenant, and conscience. The definite article ‘the’ reflects His unique character, as described in Isaiah 45:5: ‘I am the Lord, and there is none else, there is no God beside Me’. These words also speak of God’s flawless character, His inability to be any less than absolute in His holiness and goodness. This is the Lord into Whose presence we enter today.
The acknowledgment of the Lord’s presence must mark our attitude as we meet today to obey His words: This do in remembrance of Me. Our consideration of Who He is will cause reverence in our company as we appreciate that the Lord Himself meets with us. Our consideration that He died to save us will cause thankfulness in our company as we appreciate how much He loves us. Our consideration that He is coming to receive us unto Himself will cause wonder and hope in our company as we consider how much He desires for us to see Him in His glory.
The scenes of Calvary touch our hearts today as we reflect on how the great I am became the Lamb of God. His shame and suffering on our behalf is precious to us as we consider that greatest of all historical events and declare ‘It is the Lord’. -Jim MacIntosh
