And there went a man of the house of Levi, and took to wife a daughter of Levi. Exodus 2:1
The ancient Israelites had no restrictions that required them to marry within their own tribe, and such intertribal marriages were common. For example Samson’s father was of the tribe of Dan, and his mother from the tribe of Judah. Israelites were forbidden to marry Gentiles, that much the Scriptures were clear on. But no such limitation was imposed on marrying someone from another tribe. So why does the Holy Spirit emphasize in our text that Amram and Jochebed were both Levites?
Just as a Jew would be disobedient for marrying a Gentile, so too a Christian would be disobedient and unwise for marrying an unbeliever. Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? And what communion hath light with darkness? 2 Corinthians 6:14 Stories abound of young Christians making spiritual shipwreck by choosing an unsaved spouse. But sometimes there are more things to consider when it comes to marriage, or to business connections, or other relationships that require compatible souls.
Our text involves a Levite marrying a Levite. Within the Israelite society, Levites were the worship leaders, the students of Scripture, the workers in the things of God. Amram and Jochebed were well matched. So are Christians who share those things that are truly important. Such things as an appreciation for the lordship of Christ, a love for God’s people and His Assembly, a love for lost souls, and a willingness to sacrifice self for the honour of their Lord.
Our closest connections should always be with those who share or exceed our level of spirituality. -Jim MacIntosh
