And it came to pass, that there went out some of the people on the seventh day for to gather, and they found none. Exodus 16:27
What a disappointment! Every day for almost a week, there was manna to collect first thing in the morning. There was enough for the day for everybody as long as you went out and collected it before the sun melted it. But now it’s the seventh day, and the people who went out to get their manna for the day found there was none to collect. They had learned to count on that daily manna gathering for their day’s meals, and now there is nothing. Why? Well, Moses had said to collect twice as much on Friday. These people hadn’t, and now had to do without. Like the people today who expect God’s blessings even when they don’t listen to Him.
Around us are millions who are suffering because of their disobedience. And it’s not just the smokers with their coughs and cancers, or the vapers with their popcorn lungs. Educators wonder why there is so much violence and crime in the schools that they have banned God and His Word from. Parents wonder why there is so much rebellion and entitlement from children who they have failed to discipline. Today’s society bemoans the moral collapse of a world where the unborn are discarded as inconvenient, where the elderly are pushed into euthanasia, where God’s pattern for marriage and the family is rejected as a quaint option. Rich blessings of past generations are rapidly vanishing because God and His Word are being ignored.
Perhaps Isaiah said it best: ‘If ye be willing and obedient, ye shall eat the good of the land: But if ye refuse and rebel, ye shall be devoured with the sword: for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it. (Isaiah 1:19-20) Heeding the Lord was essential for manna gatherers – and it is just as critical for God’s people today. -Jim MacIntosh
