And Pharaoh charged all his people, saying, Every son that is born ye shall cast into the river, and every daughter ye shall save alive. Exodus 1:22
We can’t imagine the horror that swept across the children of Israel in their quarter of Egypt. A death sentence for every baby boy as soon as he was born. This was no small order, given the large numbers of births among the Hebrew women at that time. And such a gruesome death, too, being tossed alive to drown in the Nile. And all to satisfy the anger of a selfish and hateful king. And yet, in this shocking execution order, we see a parallel with another death sentence on another Son to be born into this cruel world.
In reality, all of the children born in Egypt were under a death sentence, including the baby girls. Because of sin, all must eventually die. And the second death we all deserved is far more gruesome than being flung into a filthy river. And then entered another King, this time a King far wiser and more powerful than Egypt’s pharaoh, a King motivated by generosity, pity, and love. And this King decreed the death of another Son, this time His own Son. Just as the infant boys in Egypt did not deserve their cruel fate, so the Son of God did not deserve the agonies of Golgotha. But unlike the infant boys in Egypt, the Son of God came into this world with full knowledge of what He must endure.
Those who appreciate what the Son of God has done for us, delivering us from the wrath to come and making us to be heirs with Him of the glories of Heaven, will gather today to remember. Today we recall His sacrifice and His suffering. Today we wonder at His devotion to His Father’s will and at His immeasurable love for us. Today, we worship One worthy of worship, adoration, and praise. – Jim MacIntosh
