And the woman conceived, and bare a son: and when she saw him that he was a goodly child, she hid him three months. Exodus 2:2
We are talking about one of Scripture’s Faith Hall of Fame inductees here. Although her name is not mentioned in Hebrews 11, Jochebed and her husband Amram are commended there for the faith they displayed concerning their famous son: ‘By faith Moses, when he was born, was hid three months of his parents, because they saw he was a proper child; and they were not afraid of the king’s commandment’ – Hebrews 11:23. Anyone who has ever been near a newborn baby knows that hiding such a child for three hours is nigh impossible; and here we have a faithful mother succeeding for three months! What a hero! What an example!
Moses’ parents saw something in their tiny son that triggered their heroic efforts. The word ‘goodly’ is the same word used in Genesis 1, when God placed His stamp of ‘very good’ on His creation. This couple could never have imagined what eventually happened to their boy, but they saw in him a potential far beyond the ordinary. What do Christian parents today see when a child is born into their family? No, we can never see into the future, but we should always be able to see the potential for God in that child.
Try to imagine what those parents went through to hide the presence of a newborn infant in their home. We are not told that they prayed, but there is no doubt that they did. Somehow they were able to silence the tiny cries and hide any evidence that could be detected by pharaoh’s spies. Just like today’s parents work hard to raise their children in a godly environment. Moses’ parents knew their time was limited; they trusted their God for what lay beyond three months. Just as today’s parents must trust our God for a world beyond their power to control.
Our children have potential for God. Do we see it? Do we act by faith on it? -Jim MacIntosh
