And Pharaoh’s daughter said unto her, Take this child away, and nurse it for me, and I will give thee thy wages. And the woman took the child, and nursed it. Exodus 2:9
In 1773, English poet William Cowper wrote a lovely hymn entitled ‘God moves in a mysterious way’, from which we get a common and profound saying among the Lord’s people: ‘God moves in mysterious ways’. The third stanza of Cowper’s hymn speaks volumes about our inability to fathom God’s great purposes: ‘God’s purposes will ripen fast,Unfolding every hour. The bud may have a bitter taste, But sweet will be the flower. Blind unbelief is sure to err And scan His work in vain. God is his own interpreter, And He will make it plain.’ We see proof of God’s unsearchable wisdom in today’s text.
The account of how the infant Moses became the son of Pharaoh’s daughter is more strange than most fiction writers can imagine. It is all part of God’s great plan to provide Himself with a leader great enough to lead His people out of Egypt’s bondage and to be the human author for the first five books of our Bible. Apart from this account of Moses’ rescue from the Nile bulrushes, the history of the children of Israel could have been vastly different. Think of a significant event in your own life that had a dramatic impact on how your life proceeded from that point. Your Father certainly knew of that event, and perhaps ordered it.
Four powerful words leap out of the Lord’s Prayer that we need to keep in mind: ‘Thy will be done’ – Matthew 6:10. These words are not an appeal from us for God to do His will, but an acknowledgment from us that the will of God will be done, and a appeal from us to accept that will, whether we understand it or not. As Cowper said, ‘He will make it plain’ in His own time. – Jim MacIntosh
