And the LORD said unto Moses and Aaron, This is the ordinance of the Passover: There shall no stranger eat thereof. Exodus 12:43
Many modern day Jews are very welcoming when it comes to their Passover, or Seder meal. They begin the meal with the following invitation: ‘Ha Lahma Anya – All who are hungry, let them come and eat. All who are in need, let them come celebrate Passover with us’. This ancient observance is steeped in many traditions and actions that point back to the night of the deliverance from Egypt. And Christians will see in many of these things types and shadows that point to the Lord Jesus Christ. But originally, it was not so; our text makes it clear that no one who was not included in that original deliverance could partake of that original Passover meal.
If you think about it, that Passover supper would have absolutely no meaning to any Egyptians who might be visiting an Israelite home. They would know nothing of the blood of the lamb applied to the door posts, or of the significance of the unleavened bread, or the coming march to the land of promise. We can see the pointlessness of anyone today eating the Lord’s Supper when they know nothing of the redemption provided by the One Who gave His body and shed His blood for their salvation. To those who have never come to know and love the Saviour, eating His memorial feast would be just a religious observance with no real significance.
There is a religious world around us that is filled with strangers. They try to appease a God they do not know with ordinance they do not understand. How different it is for those of us who have come to the knowledge of the truth. For us, we can – as Hebrews 10:22 declares – draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith. -Jim MacIntosh
