And the blood shall be to you for a token upon the houses where ye are: and when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and the plague shall not be upon you to destroy you, when I smite the land of Egypt. Exodus 12:13
A few years ago we needed to buy a fresh supply of song books for our Sunday school. But when we went to order more from our usual supplier, we found the books had undergone a drastic change. All of the choruses that mentioned the blood of Christ were either deleted or rewritten. Shame on them! Their books are now useless, and we had to find another supplier, which we did. And we still sing ‘What can wash away my sin? Nothing but the blood of Jesus!’ The blood is essential.
Blood was certainly essential to the children of Israel on the first Passover night. Without that blood on their door posts, the death angel would enter the home and claim the life of the firstborn. Just as he did in the homes of the Egyptians where no blood was applied. Hebrews 9:22 reminds us that there is no remission of sins without the shedding of blood. And not just any blood will do. The law of Moses carefully described what animals were required and acceptable for sacrifices, and how to perform the shedding of their blood. And yet, all of those sacrifices were just proxies. The were mere representatives of that which was to come. But the crimson thread of all those dead Had a value not their own, And animal blood though it be a flood, Did not have power to atone. The great I Am would become the Lamb And shed such precious blood, That the crimson tide could satisfy Forever a holy God.
Even the religious world today shrinks from even mentioning the precious blood of Christ. It is offensive to them. But we should never take offence at that blood or ever cease from praising God for sending His Son to shed it. It is the only currency that God will accept as our admission to His Heaven. -Jim MacIntosh
