And Moses said unto God, Who am I, that I should go unto Pharaoh, and that I should bring forth the children of Israel out of Egypt? Exodus 3:11
In 1946, a movie named ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ was released, and became one of the best-loved Christmas stories of all time. It’s the fanciful story of how a small town good-hearted man named George Bailey was granted his wish to see his town as it would have developed if he had never been born. Most of us don’t realize the difference we have made and will make by our presence in this world. So the little question in our text – who am I? – let’s think about that.
Look into your mirror and see.. a sinner! Almost 8.3 billion people occupy our planet, and without one exception we are all sinners. Despite the incredible differences in us, we have all come short of the glory of God and are deserving of judgment. A task, such as that facing Moses who needed to challenge the king of Egypt and lead a million refugees to a land of freedom and plenty, is impossible. Like Moses, we see our shortcomings and our lack of power, and ask, who am I? With nothing but filthy rags for righteousnesses, we can do nothing but appeal to the mercy of God.
Look into your mirror and see.. a saint! We know how Moses made out with what God asked him to do. With God’s presence and power, Moses achieved far more than any of us could ever aspire to. But we have the same access to the same presence and power. With sins forgiven and Heaven guaranteed, we have been planted firmly on the highway to victory for our Lord. We have His Word, His Spirit, and His people We can say with Paul, ‘I can do all things through Christ which strengthened me – Philippians 4:13.
What can you do for your Lord? It depends on what you see when you look in your mirror and ask: who am I? -Jim MacIntosh
