The Lord shall fight for you, and ye shall hold your peace. Exodus 14:14
A huge army is chasing the Israelites, and has them boxed in between the mountains and the Red Sea. The Israelites are not prepared for battle; they are on their journey to the land of promise, geared for travel, not for fighting. They know the Lord has led them to their current location because of the pillar cloud that He provided. And now, the situation looks hopeless, until they receive the promise from the Lord.
A promise from the Lord is all we need, too when we encounter situations that seem hopeless. But if we know that the Lord has led us to where we are, we need not fear that He will leads us through the situation. Today’s text was initially for the Israelites, a promise that God gloriously kept for them. But this promise is still in our Bible today, still available for us to claim if we need it.
There is a caution, though. Up to this point, the children of Israel had done exactly what the Lord had told them to do. So when they received His promise, they could be sure that He would keep it. If we would claim this wonderful promise, we must be sure we have been obeying the Lord. A Christian who has disobeyed the Word of God has no claim on this promise. The Lord has promised to be with us in our weakness, but never in our disobedience.
Have you ever held your peace and allowed the Lord to fight for you? Keep doing as He bids you in His Word, and the opportunities will come. -Jim MacIntosh
