And I will send an angel before thee; and I will drive out the Canaanite, the Amorite, and the Hittite, and the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite. Exodus 33:2
Did you ever have an angel go before you when you went forth to do something for the Lord? You don’t know? How would you know? That’s not an easy question to answer, is it? We know so little about angels and their role in our lives. But one thing we do know from Psalm 103 is that angels are the armies of the Lord who do His will. And we also know from Hebrews 1:14 that they are to serve us, the Christians. ‘Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation?’ Exactly how, we don’t know. But we do know why. They are doing God’s will. And if it is God’s will for you to serve Him in some way, He may well have His angels involved in helping you.
Our text is speaking of the land of promise to which God was leading the children of Israel. To claim it, they would have to conquer its occupants, and it would not be easy. But they would have an angel. If we read the book of Joshua, we can see the hand of God in driving out the Canaanite, the Amorite, and the Hittite, and the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite. Those enemies never had a chance, because the armies of the Israelites were accompanied by an angel far more powerful than them all. Why was the angel involved? Because it was God’s will that His people should occupy the promised land. Just as it is His will that they occupy that land today. Just as it is His will that you experience victory as a child of God.
Think about the angel of the Lord today; will that servant of the Lord be involved in helping you somehow? The possibility is fascinating! -Jim MacIntosh
