Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made that same Jesus, Whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ. Acts 2:36
According to a 2020 report by Pew Research, there are almost two million Jews or people with a Jewish background in the United States who claim to be Christians. That is an impressive number, considering that the Jewish leaders told Pilate at Jesus’ trial that they would not have Him to rule over them. And Judaism maintains that position today, as it has for almost two thousand years. But that will change.
As Christians, we know that God has made Jesus both Lord and Christ. The term ‘Lord’ refers to His authority, and the term ‘Christ’ refers to His accomplishments. As Lord, He is divine, the sovereign creator now seated at God’s right hand in power and glory. As Christ, He is the Messiah, the promised and anointed One Who fulfilled all of the Old Testament prophecies, and Who satisfied all of God’s righteous claims against sinful humanity. We recognize His full title of Lord Jesus Christ in acknowledgment of Who He is and what He has achieved.
In today’s text, Peter tells his Pentecost audience of Jews that the Jesus Who they crucified is both Lord and Christ. That message continues to ring out today to both Jews and Gentiles. Peter also prophesied that this is a message that all the house of Israel will know assuredly. I believe that prophecy is not far from being fulfilled.-Jim MacIntosh
