And the Lord said unto Moses, Whosoever hath sinned against Me, him will I blot out of My book. Exodus 32:33
What book is God referring to here? It must be terribly serious for God to utter such a declaration. Earlier, God had threatened to destroy all of the Israelites because of their idolatry with the golden calf, reserving His blessings only for Moses and his family. But with today’s text, God is not addressing the sin of the nation but of the individual. The word ‘whosoever’ is singular; it applies to everybody, but one at a time. Moses had interceded on behalf of the nation, but he could not do so for the individual; each person had to deal with God directly. And there was a book involved… and a blotting out possible.
We don’t know just which book our text is referring to, but we are aware of a book into which our names have been placed. It is called the Lamb’s Book of Life and we find it in several times in Revelation – chapter 3 verse 5, chapter 13 verse 8, chapter 20 verses 12 and 15, and in chapter 21 verse 27. We were written in that book the moment we were saved. Our faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour secured our place in that glorious volume. That’s how we know the Lamb’s Book of Life is different from the one in today’s text. In that one, a person could be blotted out. But not so with the Lamb’s Book of Life.
Who wrote you into that great book? It was not yourself; if you were at all like me, you did not know the book existed at that time. Because it is called the Lamb’s Book of Life, we can be confident that the Lamb of God placed us in that book. Note in Revelation 21:27 that He did not place just our name in that book, but he placed us in the book. That’s eternal security. That’s precious! -Jim MacIntosh
