Then Moses stood in the gate of the camp, and said, Who is on the LORD’S side? Let him come unto me. And all the sons of Levi gathered themselves together unto him. Exodus 32:26
Moses’ call in today’s text for those on the Lord’s side came during the people’s departure into golden calf worship. But it’s not the only time this question appears in Scripture. After the Israelites entered the promised land, Joshua challenged them to ‘choose you this day whom ye will serve’ Joshua 24:15. In his confrontation with the Baal priests at Mount Carmen, Elijah demanded off the people, ‘How long halt ye between two opinions? If the Lord be God, follow Him’ 1 Kings 18:21. And in the letter to the Laodiceans, the Lord tells that lukewarm assembly ‘I would thou wert cold or hot’ Revelation 3:15. Dare we ask today who is on the Lord’s side?
We know what happened when Moses asked the question in our text: all the sons of Levi responded, and in doing so that entire tribe entered into a special relationship with God. By aligning themselves with Moses and his Lord, those Levites stepped outside the camp of the rebellious and idolatrous Israelites. It’s the same today. As Christians, God is calling us to align ourselves with Him and His people. He is calling us to separate ourselves from the world and its rebellious ways. He is calling us to separate ourselves from the sinful lifestyles, from the degrading and shameful entertainment and music, and from the filthy language and profanity of the society around us. And if we will heed His call and show ourselves to be on the Lord’s side, we will find ourselves able to appreciate our Lord and His purposes and His rich and precious promises. And we enter into rich blessings forever.
