And the people thirsted there for water; and the people murmured against Moses, and said, Wherefore is this that thou hast brought us up out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and our cattle with thirst? Exodus 17:3
Few needs in this life are more critical than having enough water to drink. And that need is incredibly enhanced when you are marching through a hot and dry wilderness. So the alarm of the children of Israel at the lack of water in today’s text is understandable. But their lack of trust in the Lord and in His servant Moses to provide the water they need is not. God’s miraculous provision for them has already been proven. He had led them to deliverance through the Red Sea, sweetened the bitter waters of Marah, and showered them daily with a bounty of manna. Suddenly, they lost confidence in His ability to supply them with their necessary water. Are we any better?
We bow our heads to give thanks for the meal that is set before us. But how much do we worry about where the money will come from for the next week’s groceries. We smile as we button up today’s shirt. But how often do we fear the loss of income that would prevent us from affording the next season’s wardrobe? We see and appreciate each day’s blessings. But how often do we fret about the many uncertainties of the future? We shake our heads at the lack of faith in the camp of the Israelites in a God Who had already proven His boundless faithfulness time and again. But how often do we murmur and worry about our future when we have already received from our Lord’s hands everything that we have needed until now?
Remember our Saviour’s words: ‘Your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things – Matthew 6:32. Learning to trust our Father to meet our needs is one of the greatest lessons of our Christian experience. -Jim MacIntosh
