And Moses said unto Aaron, Take a pot, and put an omer full of manna therein, and lay it up before the LORD, to be kept for your generations. Exodus 16:33
That wonderful memorial pot of manna – what was it made of? You might well wonder about that if you were reading this verse in one of the modern language versions; most of them don’t say pot, they say jar or jug, which would mean an earthen jug. And they would be wrong. Scripture does not leave us wondering. Hebrews 9:4 declares it was a golden pot. So does our text as rendered in the Septuagint version, a Greek translation that the Lord Jesus often quoted. Does it matter? Of course it does. An earthen jug destroyed the type of Christ that is presented by that wonderful memorial pot.
Genesis 2:7 tells us that the Lord God formed man from the dust of the ground. That is why 1 Corinthians 15:47 tells us ‘The first man (that is, Adam) is of the earth, earthy: the second Man is the Lord from Heaven’. So an earthen jug would be a false type of Christ. But a pot made of gold, which is precious and imperishable, is an excellent type of Christ. So much about the manna that went into that pot also speaks of Christ. Just as the Israelites had God’s wonderful provision of manna to eat until they reached the promised land, so we today have everything in our Lord and Saviour to sustain us until He calls us Home.
Little wonder, then, that the golden pot of manna was placed, along with the tables of the Law and Aaron’s rod that budded, into the Ark of the Covenant. God’s wonderful provision for His people today is pictured by that golden pot and its contents. The hymn writer Frances Bevan reminds us: ‘Now none but Christ can satisfy, None other name for me. There’s love, and life, and lasting joy, Christ Jesus found in thee. -Jim MacIntosh
