And the Egyptians shall know that I am the LORD, when I have gotten Me honour upon Pharaoh, upon his chariots, and upon his horsemen. Exodus 14:18
God’s patience with Pharaoh had run its full course, and the man who thought he could do as he liked with the children of Israel was about to get his final message from the God of those same Israelites. For his whole life, Pharaoh had regarded those Israelites as his own slave force. For the past few months, God had been trying to convince Pharaoh otherwise. But the stubborn king had pushed aside ten of the most devastating messages imaginable. Despite all that he had seen and heard of the power of the God of the Israelites, Pharaoh was determined to challenge Him one last time. But God was done with him.
We know what happened to Pharaoh and his chariots and his horsemen. Within hours of the declaration in today’s text, the Red Sea would be their grave. Pharaoh was a tyrant and he met a tyrant’s end. So did every tyrant who has come along ever since with their hatred of and harm to God’s people. Those who did die in their own beds will meet full judgment at the Great White Throne for every vile act. Stripped of any honour they might have claimed, they will acknowledge the honour of the God Who they defied.
Look about you today, and try to see if there are any about you who acknowledge the God Who we worship. Listen to their language and know that every taking of His Name in vain will be punished. So will every rejection of His laws regarding honesty, morality, decency, and mercy. The omnipotent display of God’s honour on Pharaoh and his supposed might serves as a warning to all of those who would defy Him today.
Don’t be deceived today, dear Christian. Those who would be your enemies today because you belong to God will answer to Him in full measure. -Jim MacIntosh
