And Moses said unto the LORD, O my Lord, I am not eloquent, neither heretofore, nor since thou hast spoken unto thy servant: but I am slow of speech, and of a slow tongue. Exodus 4:10
You have probably heard the saying that God does not call those who are qualified, He qualifies those who He has called. Many are the cases in which people develop capabilities after they are saved that far exceed anything they could do before their conversion. So in our text as Moses is relating his lack of eloquence to God, he is really making excuses for his reluctance to do the Lord’s bidding. If we read Stephen’s defence in Acts 7, we find that Moses, before he had to flee Egypt, was noted as being mighty in words and in deeds. So his excuse was groundless.
God had the answer to Moses’ excuses. He would provide Moses’ brother Aaron – a good talker – to be his spokesman, and Aaron was already on his way. God had made His instructions plain to Moses, and all Moses had to do was obey the call. God will make His will for us plain, too, if we are studying His Word and open to His leading. Our objections will be just as groundless as Moses’ initial response.
As the years went by and as Moses looked back on his encounter with God at the burning bush, he must have wondered at his reluctance and his excuses. He would remember the miracles God had performed, the promises God had made and fulfilled, the guidance and provision that God had fully met along the way. And he would rejoice that God had called him and had led him through such thrilling experiences.
Moses had a mighty role to play for God. Your role will be nothing like his. But it is just as important that you follow the Lord’s leading, even if He has to make some changes in you first. -Jim MacIntosh
