Thou shalt not take the Name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh His Name in vain. Exodus 20:7
Most Christians who I know break this great commandment every day, and don’t give a thought to how serious it is to take the Lord’s Name in vain. The devil has so polluted the tongues of the Lord’s people that God’s holy Name is dragged in the dirt by the very people who should be exalting It. Oh, but you say, I don’t swear; I don’t use God’s Name in vain. Yes, you do.
The thoughtless use of minced oaths by Christians is disgusting, once you recognize it. A minced oath is using the Lord’s Name with a slightly different pronunciation. Saying the words ‘gosh’ or ‘golly’, for example, is exactly the same thing as saying ‘God’. You just put a little butter on it. The same goes for ‘gee’, a buttered version of ‘Jesus’. The world’s most common oath these days is ‘Oh my God’; you hear it hundreds of times a day. The popular Christian version is ‘Oh my goodness’. But it’s the same thing, just masked enough to ease the conscience. So the use of the term OMG is always blasphemous, regardless of what you pretend it means.
So why is this important? Just look at the second half of the commandment: ‘for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh His Name in vain’. Read that again, and tell me if the Lord considers this a small or unimportant matter. We are talking about the great Name of the Lord God Omnipotent, the God in whom thy breath is, the great Lover of our souls Who sent His Son a Saviour into the world to redeem lost sinners. How do you think He must feel when those He has lovingly rescued from the dunghill of humanity continue to treat His excellent Name like an unholy thing. He will not hold you guiltless.-Jim MacIntosh
