Go, and gather the elders of Israel together, and say unto them, The LORD God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Jacob, appeared unto me, saying, I have surely visited you, and seen that which is done to you in Egypt. Exodus 3:16
A preacher organized a Gospel supper in a poor part of his city, offering a free meal to anyone who would come and listen to a message. To let everyone know, he had very nice invitations printed, and he took them to the post office and paid for them to be delivered to everyone in the neighbourhood. To his surprise, nobody came to the supper. He found out years afterward that someone at the post office had tossed all those invitations in the trash. For all those years, nobody knew why the Gospel supper was a flop. Nobody but God.
When Moses received his instructions from God for leading the Israelites out of Egypt, those instructions included letting the people know that they were never abandoned by God. And they were also told that none of the evil that the Egyptians had done to the Lord’s people had escaped God’s attention either. He had seen their slavery and had heard their groanings all along. It’s the same today when people around us oppose the work of God and unfairly mistreat the Christians.
When God told the Israelites ‘I have seen that which is done to you’, He was reminding them of His deep interest in His own people. But He was also reminding them that the Egyptians would pay dearly for what they had done to His people. God has not changed in this dispensation. The plagues that fell on the Egyptians were slight compared to the judgment that the awaits the enemies of the Cross today.
God knows all about our struggles and trials. And what we sometimes think is unfair is not only known to Him, but is also going to be addressed by Him in absolute fairness. – Jim MacIntosh
