How great are His signs! And how mighty are His wonders! His kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and His dominion is from generation to generation. Daniel 4:3
As you review in your memory the history of Britain that you learned in high school, can you remember how many King Henrys there were? Or what each King Henry was famous for? Or in what years each of them ruled? It’s hard to keep track of, for sure, as these monarchs ruled during different time periods and in vastly different circumstances. Some were good kings, some had their moments, and others were trouble and grief. Some lived long lives, and others died young; some achieved great exploits, others destroyed. In so many ways, the King Henrys of Britain were the opposite of the great King of Whom Nebuchadnezzar was speaking in today’s text.
When we look about and see the godless attitude of our world, the rebellion and rejection of God’s truth and goodness, we can sometimes forget that there never has been nor ever will be a time when God is not on the throne. When time began, when our world, and the rest of creation, was framed and populated, He was King of Kings. Amid the march of human history stands firm the reality that God has always been in control of events and circumstances, raising up earthly rulers as He will, and casting down kingdoms at His own will. Not only has He been in control of the world`s leaders and everything to do with the big picture, but He has also been in control of the little things of this world, including the daily lives and circumstances of us all, of the natural world around us, and everything to do with the creation in which we exist. Nebuchadnezzar noted that His kingdom is from generation to generation, unlike the King Kenrys of this world who ruled a few years, a generation or two, then died, leaving another generation to another king. God’s rule and reign have been constant and consistent. As His children, we have no concerns as He rules not only the world but our lives.
We appreciate today that the King of Kings is our Heavenly Father. We can trust His everlasting kindness and tenderness to His children. But we can also kneel in awe today at the realization of His everlasting kingdom. -Jim MacIntosh
