Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness. 1 Thessalonians 5:5
What makes Christians the children of light? The Scriptures declare that God is light, and we are His children. It’s as simple as that. And it is also as profound as that. Even though as Christians we often entangle ourselves with the dark things of this world, the light of God’s presence is with us, whether we appreciate it or not.
So what makes us children of the day? God dwells in eternal day, and we will dwell in that eternal day with Him. It is difficult for us to understand how we will not need any night in Heaven. Night is important to us here because the hours of darkness give our bodies the rest and restoration of sleep that they so desperately need. But in Heaven, we will never tire or deteriorate, so no sleep is needed.
Our present as children of light and our future as children of the day is such a contrast to the world that we live in now. The Lord Jesus reminds is that ‘men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil’ – John 3:19. We remember those days. Before our salvation, we were in as much darkness as any we see around us. But the light of the glorious gospel of Christ shone into our souls.
May we appreciate being the children of light. And may we shine that light to those still in the darkness. -Jim MacIntosh
