Forasmuch as many have taken in hand to set forth in order a declaration of those things which are most surely believed among us. Luke 1:1
In the 1800s, an Anglican clergyman named John William Burgon became dean of Chichester Cathedral in Sussex England. And he became engaged in a lifelong fight to preserve the Bible that we use today. Dean Burgon vigorously challenged the work of a committee that was creating a revised version of the Bible. He pointed out the many errors of that committee, including their use of obviously corrupted manuscripts to translate the Bible. That committee’s work became the basis of most of the modern language versions that are in use around us today. Why did Burgon challenge that work? Because it attacked ‘those things which are most surely believed among us’.
If you want a Bible reference for ‘those things which are most surely believed among us’, try Genesis 1:1 to Revelation 22:21. That’s right, the entire Bible. ‘All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness’ -2 Timothy 3:16. Be very wary of anyone who tells you there are things in our Bible that should not be there. But that is what the modern language versions do. Why for example do those Bibles omit Acts 8:37? Because that committee was led by men who disagreed with the requirement for believers only to be baptized. But that truth is one of those things which are most surely believed among us.
Another of those things which are most surely believed among us is the glorious truth of the Rapture. This truth gives us hope every day as we live in a world that is becoming more hostile toward God and His people. As this world ripens rapidly for judgment, we are assured that we will not experience the great tribulation. But not all of professing christendom believes that. Those who hold to the so-called reformed doctrine reject the truths of the dispensations so clearly laid out in the Scriptures. So they reject anything to do with the Rapture. Don’t believe them!
Those things which are most surely believed among us are precious. God gave them to us for our blessing. Let us like Luke continue to declare them and to treasure them. – Jim MacIntosh
