A recent statement by a Christian caught my attention: ‘If the Bible says it, your opinion about it does not matter’. Amen to that! What the Scriptures declare plainly should be accepted at face value, with no argument or debate from us. For example, we might be asked for our opinion about abortion. But Christians don’t have an opinion about abortion; the Word of God plainly declares that the taking of a human life is murder. The opinions of doctors and judges have led to laws that differ from the Word of God. But the stampede to endorse those laws should never include Christians, according to our text today.
We are living in a world that seems to be in a mad hurry to throw off all restraints that have historically been based on the Bible. The great value that God places on every human life is being tossed aside like garbage. And it’s not just with abortion, either. The legalization of MAID, medical assistance in dying, is a direct violation of the commandment not to kill. And it is rapidly evolving into a convenient way to rid society of the inconvenience of dealing with sick and infirm people. Murder. Society, including many religious organizations falsely calling themselves churches, keeps rushing to embrace the abomination of homosexuality, clearly condemned by Scripture. And the Christian, in the face of all of this evil, is strictly forbidden by today’s text, to follow the multitude.
We may well be condemned by the world for doing what is right. But that is far better than being condemned by God for going along with what is wrong. -Jim MacIntosh
