The children of Israel were about to experience one of the most dramatic events in their entire history. After three days of careful preparation, they were going to gather around Mount Sinai. And receive direct communication from God as to how they were to conduct themselves as His people. It would include thunders and lightning, loud blowing of a trumpet, and the mountain would quake greatly. The mountain would also be covered in smoke like a furnace. Then the Lord would speak to Moses and the people. The event was so dramatic that the people were unable to bear it, and had to get Moses to go to the mountain for them. What a contrast to how the Lord’s people receive the Word for the Lord today!
There is nothing dramatic as you pick up your Bible, and sit comfortably in your favourite chair. You open the Book, and select from far more than the Israelites were about to receive at Mount Sinai. Beginning with the Ten Commandments, God gave the Israelites His law. We can read that today if we wish. But we need not stop there. We can peruse the entirety of the Old Testament, with its historical records, its great works of poetry, the writings of the prophets both major and minor. And that is before we come to the fulfilment of the Old Testament in the Gospels, epistles, and Revelation. It is all God’s Word, all the revelation of Himself to humanity.
Look at your Bible differently today. It’s not just a great book that we should read and study regularly. It is everything that God would have us to know. And we don’t need to go to a thundering mountain to read it. -Jim MacIntosh
