Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, according to the promise of life which is in Christ Jesus. 2 Timothy 1:1
What would you write to your dearest friend if you were the apostle Paul awaiting imminent execution? As Paul takes up his pen to write what would be his final letter to be included in the canon of Scripture, we can only imagine the thoughts going through his mind. He knows that the end of his amazing life of devotion and service to his Lord is near: ‘For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand’ 2 Timothy 4:6. He prepares to leave with a clear conscience but also with deep concerns for the work and the people he is leaving behind. Much like older Christians now who prepare to leave behind the work that is precious to them.
In (almost) every Assembly are older sisters who have kept the faith regarding the role that God gave to the women in the fellowship. These dear older saints try their best to be role models for younger women and girls. Their modest and respectful attire sets the tone for the appearance for all. They offer guidance and advice when asked and when it is needed, as appropriate. They show others what it means to support the Assembly oversight, the Assembly activities, and the work of the Gospel. Who will carry on this critical role when these dear aged sisters are called Home?
And what of the senior men among us whose presence may be coming to a close? These include but are not limited to the Assembly oversight, men with a heart and many prayers for the Lord’s people. Some of these men have set the pattern for Assembly activity participation of all kinds, their knowledge and experience a treasure house of blessing for the entire fellowship. As they age and are unable to continue the physical exertion they once poured into the Assembly, their wisdom becomes more precious. But they will shortly leave behind far more than an empty chair.
Dear young Christians, treasure the dear older saints around you. Learn from them and imitate those things that make them resemble their Saviour. Because what they have lived out for God can continue to live out in you. -Jim MacIntosh
