A labour crisis is rapidly approaching in the province of New Brunswick, and probably in your province too, because of misguided advice given to young people over the past 40 years. Education officials have been advising most of those young people to go to university after high school as their best preparation for life’s employment. As a result, far too few of those young people opted for careers in the trades. And many of the community colleges actually stopped offering courses in some trades. So now, most of the carpenters, plumbers, electricians, and other tradespeople are approaching retirement with far too few younger people ready to take their places. All because somebody placed too low a value on those who work with their hands. God doesn’t do that!
Our text reads like the qualifications of a great spiritual leader of the nation. But it’s describing Bezaleel, a tradesman, a highly skilled metal worker, not a leader of armies or an organizer of government policies or a professor of academics. Bezaleel had wisdom, and understanding, and knowledge, and great skill, all provided by the Holy Spirit. And it was all for doing the tradesmen work needed to make the sanctuary of the Lord beautiful. What great value the Lord placed on work that most of us would consider humble and unimportant!
Are you a Bezaleel? Has God given you some tasks that seem to be small and not very important? If those tasks are for Him, they are not as small or unimportant as you think. God sees a value in them that most people will miss. And that means your reward for doing your part well will be far higher than most people realize. -Jim MacIntosh
