And I am come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians, and to bring them up out of that land unto a good land and a large, unto a land flowing with milk and honey; unto the place of the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites. Exodus 3:8
So, God was going to deliver the children of Israel from the bondage of Egypt. Wonderful! And He was a going to bring them to a good land flowing with milk and honey. Even more wonderful! And that land is currently occupied by enemies who would oppose the Israelites every step of the way. Whoa! What kind of deliverance is that? The same kind of deliverance that God has for His people today.
The Gospel message brought deliverance for us, from bondage that exceeded that of Egyptian taskmasters by far. Our salvation enabled us to rejoice in deliverance from our sins and the punishment we deserved for them. And it gave us the glorious hope of everlasting life in the presence of our Redeemer. Such a wonderful salvation! But God did not transport us to the mansions of glory the moment we were saved, any more than He ushered the Israelites into the promised land devoid of enemies. And the enemies we must overcome on our way to Glory are just as real as those the Israelites faced.
Our enemies today are the world, the flesh, and the devil. To live the victorious Christian life will require us to overcome those foes. Just as He aided the Israelites in their occupation of Canaan, so God is with us to help us to victory. And He has given to us the whole armour of God keep us safe and make us strong. Read about it in Ephesians 6. And learn it well. It’s everything you need for victory.
Did you notice the last of the enemies the Israelites were to face? The Jebusites occupied the site of what was to be – and is today – the capital city of Israel. Jebus was not defeated to become Jerusalem until David became king. Just like we will never overcome all our foes until our Saviour becomes the Lord and King of our lives. – Jim MacIntosh
