The words of Jeremiah the son of Hilkiah, of the priests that were in Anathoth in the land of Benjamin. Jeremiah 1:1
The prophecy of Jeremiah is unique among all of the books of the prophets in our Bible. Known as the weeping prophet for his dire warnings and mournful predictions, Jeremiah also foretold of coming glories for Israel that we have not seen yet. His lengthy work contains both history and prophecy, as he describes his time in Judah in its final years before the Babylonian destruction, and then predicts the nation’s restoration with incredible accuracy. Both Ezekiel and Daniel, who were prophets in Jeremiah’s later years, relied on Jeremiah’s work and confirmed it as the Word of God.
Jeremiah’s primary message is that God will not tolerate the worship of false gods. And he predicts the destruction of those who would depart from the worship of God. He told of coming destruction, and his prediction came true during his lifetime. His message is just as true today. Whether we realize it or whether we believe it, there is a departure from God even among Christians today. Disregard for the Bible and its teachings is at such a low today that our Parliament has just passed a law that regards some parts of our Bibles as ‘hate speech’. The conditions that prevailed in the church at Laodicea in Revelation 3 are the conditions in professing Christendom today and are creeping rapidly into our own Assemblies. Do we think God will condone the worship of the false gods of compromise and mammon?
Jeremiah lived to see the destruction that he predicted. It must have broken his heart to see the temple of God destroyed and its contents pillaged. There are godly men about us today who are aware of what happens when the Lord’s people depart from Him, and they are warning us about it. The world is certainly not heeding those warnings. Neither is the religious world as it glorifies its mingling with the enemies of the cross, and the so-called evangelical churches with their focus on entertainment and their adoption of Bibles that erode the truths of God.
Destruction is coming. Will we live to see it? Will the Rapture occur first? -Jim MacIntosh
