And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. Acts 2:1
As we gather each Sunday morning to remember the Lord, I usually take time to count those of us who are participating. At the same time, I make note of those of the company who are not present for the meeting. And there are some mornings when I am amazed at how many are absent from the meeting. Of course, there are always some with legitimate reasons for absence – work, illness, etc. – but there are also some with neither reason nor excuse. They could learn a lesson from the folks in our text.
This company of Jesus’ followers were all present. In the days since the Lord Jesus had returned to Heaven, they felt the need to remain close together. They no doubt remembered their Lord’s words to them: For where two or three are gathered together unto My Name, there am I in the midst of them – Matthew 18:20. Each believer knew that the place where all the believers were gathered was the right place to be. Does each believer know that today?
Those early saints not only recognized the place, but they also appreciated the unity. The words ‘with one accord’ are a powerful reminder that God’s people should be of one mind regarding our gathering. These people were in one place because their Lord told them do so. What those early saints recognized was the reality that obedience has no shades of grey. What the Scriptures declare, we should do. And the Scriptures tell us that we should be ‘Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching – Hebrews 10:25.
With one accord in one place – may it ever be so with God’s Assembly! -Jim MacIntosh
