Faithful is He that hath called you, who also will do it. 1 Thessalonians 5:24
As I began working on a new project, I realized I was going to need a type of application to perform a particular aspect of the work. I checked the computer’s list and found no such application. So I asked the department manager where I could get such an app, assuming there was one that the other writers in the department used. To my surprise, she merely shrugged and said, ‘I’m sure you’ll find something on the internet’. Maybe she was just testing my resourcefulness, I don’t know. But she had given me a job to do without giving me the means to do it. Our text tells us that God won’t do that to us.
God has a purpose for everyone who He has saved, and one of our big challenges is to discover what He has called us to do. Young Christians sometimes struggle with this because God’s purpose is not always made plain right away. Sometimes He tests our faithfulness and devotion for a while. Sometimes He has a need for a good general-purpose Christian to be dependable and helpful. But He does have a calling for every one of us. And He does not leave us to ourselves to fulfil that calling.
Sometimes our Lord calls us to do something that we are not qualified to do. No problem, He simply provides the qualifications. As the saying goes, He does not call the qualified, He qualifies the called. Sometimes our Lord requires of us something beyond our strength. That’s when Philippians 4:13 becomes precious: ‘I can do all things through Christ which strengthened me’. But our text contains a promise: Who will also do it. That gives us confidence that God’s purposes for us will always come with God’s provision. -Jim MacIntosh
