And we beseech you, brethren, to know them which labour among you, and are over you in the Lord, and admonish you. 1 Thessalonians 5:12
This weekend, many of the preaching brethren who labour in the Maritime provinces will be with us this weekend at the annual Sussex Bible conference. As always, it will be wonderful to see them, and to enjoy conversation with them. But how well do we actually know these dear men. Our text urges us to get to know them, and also to know those on the oversight of your Assembly.
Those who labour among our Assemblies in the Gospel and in ministry often have circumstances and problems that we should know about. Health problems, family issues, and other situations affect the ability of these men to be effective in their service. By being aware of these things, we can give them the prayer support, the financial support, and the encouragement that they need from us. Without being nosey, let’s make a point of getting to know these men better.
And what about those who shepherd your Assembly, how well do you know their trials and burdens? How often do you pray for them by name, and how well do you know their prayer needs? These men are under direction from the Lord to care for your soul. But our text indicates you should have a care for their souls as well. Do you care enough to get to know them better?
The Lord has raised up the preachers and the elders among us, and theirs is a crucial work among His people. How much do you know about that? -Jim MacIntosh
