Many years ago when I was working as a reporter in Fredericton, I became acquainted with two members of the city council who were Christians. Because of their godly convictions, those men had a positive impact on decisions of the council at that time. But both of those men confided in me that their presence on the council had forced them to condone actions that were wrong. They admitted that their testimony for their Lord suffered because of that. They learned to their sorrow the wisdom of today’s text.
God’s instructions for Israel included today’s rule against most dealings with their ungodly neighbours. This included defence pacts, business arrangements, and marriage covenants. In the next verse, they are told these connections would be a snare to them. The apostle Paul has a similar instruction for Christians today: Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness? 2 Corinthians 6:14. The words ‘be ye not’ tell us that this is not just a good idea or a strong suggestion; it is a clear prohibition. And many thousands of unwise Christians who have challenged it have been deluged with sorrows.
We live in this world and must interact with people who know not our Lord. But we are wise to make sure we don’t associate with them in any way that ties us to their ungodliness. -Jim MacIntosh
