Ye have seen what I did unto the Egyptians, and how I bare you on eagles’ wings, and brought you unto myself. Exodus 19:4
No, eagles do not and cannot carry their fledgelings on their wings, as some have suggested today’s text indicates. This reference to being borne on eagles’ wings is to an entirely different picture; it is to what the mighty wings of an eagle enable that great bird to do. Of the ten most powerful birds in the world, the top seven are different species of eagles, with wings that enable them to lift as much as their own weight, to soar to great heights over vast distances, and to dive with incredible speed and accuracy. They teach us some lessons about our God.
The lift of an eagle’s wings remind us that God has lifted us from our former sinful state when we were unable to do so by ourselves. Amid the teeming mass of humanity attached to the degrading and demoralizing muck of earth, our salvation has lifted us to a Rock Whose firm foundation frees us from sin’s slavery and penalty.
Just as the eagle’s wings carry him to great heights and far distances, so our God has liberated us to soar into heavenly places of worship and service for Himself. He enables us to realize the greatest purpose for which He created us, to bring glory to Himself. The achievements of a victorious Christian far exceed the greatest works of the unredeemed.
The swift and accurate swoop of an eagle, enabled by his powerful wings, is essential to provide food for himself and his family. This reminds us of the Holy Spirit within each believer unfolding the unsearchable treasures of the Scriptures and enabling us to access and enjoy the exceeding rich and precious promises of God.
Isaiah reminds us that they that wait upon the Lord shall mount up with wings as eagles. How precious! -Jim MacIntosh
