Meditation for Monday
And the servant said, Lord, it is done as thou hast commanded, and yet there is room. Luke 14:22
The last ferry of the day was about to depart the wharf as we approached. The ramps had already been drawn up, and the ferry operators were preparing to pull away. Seeing us approach, they halted their departure procedures, and lowered the ramp. As we drove onto the ramp, the attendant told me, ‘Room for one more car, and you’re it!’ We had made it because there was – barely – more room on the ferry. Our text reminds us that God’s great invitation to the Marriage Supper of His Son is still valid today, because the house has not yet been filled.
The preaching of the Gospel is still valid today, because the invitation is still open, there is still roon in the Father’s house. Witnessing and living for Christ is still valid today, because there is still room at the Great Supper. Handing out tracts and Seed Sowers texts is still valid today, because God still has room for more poor sinners to enter the great banqueting hall that He is preparing. Yes, the invitation is still open, so we still need to get the Word out, still need to herald the Gospel message, still need to live for our Saviour.
The servant had been told to go out quickly to the streets and lanes, and to bring in the most unlikely of invitees. We can find ourself spiritually in the list of those invited – poor, maimed, halt, and blind. These speak of our condition before we were saved. These speak of the condition of all those who are not yet saved, whether they realize it or not. If this list speaks of all those who are unsaved, then our target with the Gospel is everybody. We can’t tell who God will deal with and bring in to the feast. He doesn’t ask us to save them, only to bring them the invitation, present them with the Gospel. And we are to do so quickly, because the time may be getting short, and the house may be filling quickly.
Those words – yet there is room – are a challenge to you and me today. Who will we present with the invitation today? Who will we see enter God’s great supper while there is still time? -Jim MacIntosh
