Food for Friday

And the disciples went, and did as Jesus commanded them. Matthew 21:6

We could to that. We are disciples. We can get marching orders from the Lord, and follow them. This was not a complicated thing that Jesus asked of His disciples, and they did it. And because they did, Jesus received honour and praise, and prophecy was fulfilled. Good for them! What about us?

We don’t always do those things that the Lord asks of us, and He doesn’t ask of us anything harder than this task that He set before His disciples. We criticize the disciples because of their unbelief, because of their mistakes, because of their internal bickering and disputes. But they did something here that we are not prepared to do. What’s that? you ask.

The disciples found a way for the Lord Jesus to be praised and honoured. They found a way to give Him the focus He deserves. And they simply obeyed. What does the Lord ask of us? He is not physically here in person. But he still deserves to be given His rightful place. And we don’t do it. We don’t speak of Him to others, sometimes not even among ourselves. We don’t wear our testimony on our sleeves for all to see. We don’t stand up for Him in public. We are backward about letting people know we are His disciples.

This does not seem like a big task that the disciples had set before them, but it had amazing consequences. As they made their way into Jerusalem, how their hearts must have soared as they saw the Lord ride into the city in triumph. How glad they must have been that they had simply done what He told them to do.
