That ye would walk worthy of God, Who hath called you unto His kingdom and glory. 1 Thessalonians 2:12
Before our salvation, the little expression in our text – walk worthy of God – was an impossibility. Our rebellion against His Word and our rejection of His Son made sure of that. But that has changed. Our new birth has enabled us to look at this little expression – walk worthy of God – not only as a possibility but also as a highly desirable goal for our lives. Let’s consider this in terms of our position before God, and as our condition before God.
Our position before God is perfect. He sees us as accepted in His beloved Son. As Paul could remind the Corinthians, ‘but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the Name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God’ – 1 Corinthians 6:11. Because of the worth of the Lord Jesus, God sees us as worthy to walk in Him.
Our condition before God can be much different from our position. If we believe and obey His Word, and if we submit ourselves to the leading of His Holy Spirit, our walk will be worth of God. But our enemies, the world, the flesh, and the devil, will do all they can to prevent such a walk. The world is awash in temptations, distractions, and persecutions that would stumble us if we allow them. The flesh is unredeemed and sinful and strives against the Spirit’s leading. And the devil opposes anything in our lives that brings glory to God. But greater is He that is in you, than he that is in the world – 1 John 4:4.
A walk worth of God should be our goal for today. -Jim MacIntosh
