Today is the Lord’s Day, the day when our thoughts should turn to themes of worship. Our text today contains three of the greatest worship themes found in our Bibles: the Rapture of the saints, the Resurrection of Jesus Christ, and the Redemption of our souls from wrath.
We eat the Lord’s Supper today with 1 Corinthians 11:26 in mind: For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord’s death till He come. The reality of our Lord’s soon return for His saints adds a joyful hope to our remembrance feast. As we look back to Calvary to remember our Saviour’s sufferings and death, we also look forward to His shout and appearance in the air to take us Home.
We eat the Lord’s supper today with the glad assurance of our risen Saviour in our midst. Our gathering on the first day of the week is in recognition that our Saviour rose in triumph from the tomb, His resurrection our assurance that God has accepted Christ’s sacrifice. Without the resurrection, we would have no hope.
We eat the Lord’s supper today because we appreciate all that is represented in the bread and the cup. We remember our Saviour’s incarnation, His sinless life, His agonies at Golgotha, and His victorious cry ‘Finished’. By His stripes we are healed, and by His blood we are washed. -Jim MacIntosh
