For the cloud of the LORD was upon the tabernacle by day, and fire was on it by night, in the sight of all the house of Israel, throughout all their journeys. Exodus 40:38
Almost 40 years would pass from the time indicated in our text until the children of Israel entered and took possession of the promised land. During those years, throughout all their journeys, regardless of the circumstances, the pillar of cloud by day and of fire by night, remained over the Tabernacle of the congregation. The Israelites could know and be reminded, simply by looking toward the Tabernacle, that the presence of the Lord was with them. But they did not even need to look; God had promised to be there, and they could rest on that promise. He has the same promise for you and me.
You and I are temples of the Holy Spirit. Consider the words of 1 Corinthians 6:19: ‘What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?’ This verse reminds us that at the moment of our conversion, the Holy Spirit took up residence within us. That is why the apostle Paul could remind Timothy, ‘The Lord knoweth them that are His’ 1 Timothy 2:19. His presence is always with us. We never need to pray, as David did, for God to not take away His Holy Spirit from us. Throughout our journey, He is with us.
So how will those around us know we are the temple of the Holy Spirit? If we show the integrity and love that our Lord and Saviour showed, if we display His compassion for lost souls, and if we have the same devotion to our Father in Heaven that He did, people will know. -Jim MacIntosh
