And he made the laver of brass, and the foot of it of brass, of the lookingglasses of the women assembling, which assembled at the door of the Tabernacle of the congregation. Exodus 38:8
A survey in Britain found that women there checked their reflection in a mirror an average of 38 times every day. That’s more than twice every waking hour. For British men, it was an average of 18 times a day, more than once every hour. The survey did not determine whether such frequent mirror-checking was because of vanity or insecurity. But those numbers tell us much about how preoccupied many of us are about our appearance. With such a preoccupation, how willing would we be to give up our mirrors? The women in our text were.
The laver of brass in the Tabernacle was for ceremonial cleansing by the priests before they could begin their service and duties. We are not told where the material was to come from for the many other articles in the Tabernacle. But our text tells us the brass, or bronze, for the laver, came from the mirrors of those women who served at the Tabernacle entrance. Mirrors in that day were made from high quality and highly polished bronze, not the glass that we use today. So donating their mirrors to make the laver represented a financial cost to those women, as well as a significant hit to their personal care.
The cleansing that the Lord’s people require today also involves a sacrifice on our part. The Psalmist reminds us of this: Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed thereto according to Thy Word – Psalm 119:9. That means looking into our Bibles, instead of looking into our mirrors, or our electronic devices, or any of the half a hundred less important things we spend time doing each day. By reading the Word of God, we clean up our life by becoming more like its Author.
