And I will send hornets before thee, which shall drive out the Hivite, the Canaanite, and the Hittite, from before thee. Exodus 23:28
As a boy, I was picking wild raspberries in a thicket as the mosquitoes annoyed me. Suddenly I became aware that the nuisance mosquitoes were replaced by something larger and much more vicious. A painful sting on my neck persuaded me to abandon my berry picking, and I have despised yellow jackets ever since. Hornets must surely be among the most hated of all insects. And yet, God used those nasty creatures to help Israel in their conquest of Canaan.
Many Christians have found themselves in situations of difficulty, accidents or other circumstances that prevented them from carrying through on their plans, even plans where they were convinced they were following the will of God. But they learned later that the problem that came up had miraculously preserved them from disaster, or unexpectedly opened a door to a great blessing. It is well said that there are no coincidences with God. Whether we encounter hornets or obstacles or some other surprise, He knew about it all along. Some of these things come along for our eventual blessing. Some of them come along to prevent us from making a huge mistake in our life.
When you encounter the hornets, make sure you find out from the Lord why they are there, because He had a good reason for sending them. -Jim MacIntosh
