And ye shall serve the LORD your God, and He shall bless thy bread, and thy water; and I will take sickness away from the midst of thee. Exodus 23:25
What a lovely promise God gave to the children of Israel! In exchange for their faithful devotion and service to Him, He would guarantee their food supply and their health. They could count on plenty of bread and other food for their tables. And in a region noted for its frequent droughts, they could be assured of enough rain to sustain their crops. Besides all this, their isolation from the violent and sinful nations around them would preserve them from the many diseases that plagued those nations. What a thankful and happy people they ought to have been! Those promises were made to Israel; have they been extended to us?
The promises to Israel were conditional on their serving the Lord. The Lord Jesus offered a similar promise to His followers: ‘But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and His righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you’ – Matthew 6:33. Paul spoke of a similar blessing in his letter to the Assembly in Philippi: But my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus – Philippians 4:19. I knew a man who in his unsaved days wasted much of his income on liquor and lotteries. But after his salvation, his family ate better, dressed better, and drove nicer cars. While some Christians do face financial struggles, we have to say that the Lord truly looks after His own.
