The LORD is a Man of war: the LORD is His Name. Exodus 15:3
On September 21, 1955, world heavyweight boxing champion Rocky Marciano took a hard right from former champion Archie Moore in the fifth round. The blow sent Marciano to the canvas, but he was up at the count of four, and went on to knock out Moore in the ninth round. It was Marciano’s final fight; he retired with a perfect record of 49 wins and no losses, and he remains the only undefeated heavyweight boxing champion the world has ever seen. But he could have lost that perfect record in his final fight, and almost did. Not so our Champion, Who cannot possibly ever lose a battle or a war.
Our text is from the victory song the Israelites sang as they saw the Egyptian armies dead on the Red Sea beaches. They had not done any of the fighting, or needed to. They had a God Who was both willing and able to fight for them. The same God is on our side too, as we consider the warfare of the people of God.
The Lord our God has a far better record than the Brockton Blockbuster Rocky Marciano. The victory over the Egyptians at the Red Sea was not His first or His final victory as He fought for the Children of Israel. In fact He has more victories coming for them, according to Biblical prophecy. And when it comes to His Gentile bride, God has given to us through His Son the victory over the judgment that our sins deserve. And daily He offers us victory over the world, the flesh, and the devil. And ultimately, He will carry us in final victory to His, and our, eternal home.
Our Lord is a Man of war, and He cannot and will not ever lose. Let us allow Him to win our battles and wars. -Jim MacIntosh
