And a mixed multitude went up also with them; and flocks, and herds, even very much cattle. Exodus 12:38
Who were the mixed multitude referred to in our text? These were in addition to the 600,000 men of Israel and their wives and children, probably close to two million people. The mixed multitude came along with them, and were definitely not Israelites. If we check the many Bible versions, we will find them identified in a few other ways: many other people, a rabble of non-Israelites, a great rabble, a foreign multitude, a mixed crowd, an innumerable mix of common people, and a crowd of mixed ancestry. Whoever they were, they were coming along for the ride. And time would prove they were nothing but trouble. And they still are.
The mixed multitude did not know the God of the Israelites nor have any interest in His purposes. Their ties to the gods of Egypt clashed constantly with the claims of the true God. Their presence initiated doubts and confusion anon the Israelites. They gladly joined rebellions and murmurings along the way. Because they were allowed to come along, they were a great hindrance to the great Exodus. Even today, as the mixed multitude of non believers is allowed to mingle with true believers, the work of God is hindered and the people of God are harmed.
Those who are unsaved don’t care about the purpose of the Gospel, and are just as pleased when its preaching is replaced with musical entertainment. They also don’t care if the Lord’s people are edified, and will opt for motivational speakers rather than expository Bible teachers. They have no interest in obedience to the Scriptures, and will compromise whenever it is convenient. Worship means nothing to them, and will be readily scrapped for almost anything else.
Beware and avoid the mixed multitude. They will harm us at best and destroy us at worst. -Jim MacIntosh
